namibia

for those of you who don’t know – i was born in namibia. i was privileged to visit there for 12 days in the beginning of march. it was such a blessing. namibia in general is a country with a very dry climate. i mean the oldest desert – the namib – is almost a third of the country, while the kalahari desert also takes up a big chunk of the country’s area. namibia has no river inside its borders that run throughout the year. so you get the picture. it is dry.
but this year it has been raining and raining and raining. rivers are running, dams are being filled. you hear stories of dams that for the first time in 35 years are overflowing. and one thing about namibia is that the land is very thankful. it would rain 10mm and a week later the field will show you their thanks for the little rain it received.
and so it is the same with the namibian people. they are humble and thankful for the small things in life. for them a relationship still has deep value. you can experience the peace and thankfulness.
so plan your next holiday in namibia. the wide open spaces and humble people will creep into your heart forever.

super 14

i am so excited about the super14. round 1 started this weekend. as i am writing this blog, 2 of the first games were already played. it is such a great competition. rugby teams from south africa (5), new zealand (5) and australia (4), play each other to be crowned the super14 champions - for those of you who don’t know. it really is a tough(rough, hard, harsh, dangerous, hard-hitting) competition, with most of the teams strong enough to win smaller rugby playing nations.

my team of course is the mighty LIONS from johannesburg. even though they have had more downs then ups the last few years, i really think that they will be able to upset the favorites in the competition, like the sharks or the crusaders.

so let us see what happen in the next 15 weeks – it is going to be rugby at its best.

where are you plugged in?

ok, i have been a crappy blogger, I know. I don’t have a reason, just the way it is.

anyway – i heard an interesting discussion the other day. “what and who you listen to, will influence what you do” try and say that over and over. it has a nice ring to it. but yeah, this is so true.

we all have that inner voice that tells us what to do. it can be when we shop or when we date or whatever we do. our inner voice is our voice of reasoning. yes or no!

the thing is what we sometimes not realize, is that we are so plugged in to someone or something, that we don’t hear the truth that is out there. and if you’re not open to other voices, your reasoning is based on the input you receive. this can either be friends, or music, even movies. not that any of these things are bad, but if that is all you receive as input, then that is where your reasoning will come from, and your reasoning will determine your actions.

maybe it is time we all take a look at where we are plugged in. what and who do you listen to?

funny thing is we get so easily trapped, because we even justify our actions not to take a look at our inputs. therefore we keep on feeding our inner voice with crap, because we see nothing wrong with it.

so take the challenge and take a good look. open your eyes otherwise life will pass you by and you will have nothing to show for it.

i guess a lot has been said about the new batman movie.  the wife and i went to see it the day it came out.  i must say - well done to heath ledger - scary sometimes, but really a job well done.  he brought the joker to a new level.

it is interesting however that our hero, batman is having a mid-life crisis.  i guess heroes also have bad days.

i think it is the same in real life - we all are somebody’s hero.  your son, your wife, your mother or your friend and sometimes we forget that all of us are just human beings.  and yes sometimes, even heroes have bad days.  well may we all rise to the occasion and figure out our heroic place in society.

so if you are old enough this is one you do not want to miss.

ps…

since i love figures it is pretty amazing to see the stats on how much money the movie made.  breaking the record several times.  watch out titanic - we might have a new winner soon - breaking $601 million will be tough, but possible - lets see what happen.

i find it difficult to agree with our national rugby’s team coach, pieter de villiers - by sending francois and ruan away from the springbok squad.  i hope he has good reason for his choice, let’s hope it is his choice.  i guess he does.  anyway - i still not agree with the man.  francois will surely be missed. so good luck to the bocks on saturday.  let’s make madiba’s day

grace,mercy and ……

so, last week one of our team members was diagnosed with cancer.  it was a shock to all of us.  i mean, he is only 20 years of age.  all of a sudden all sorts of questions pop up, because we cannot wrap our minds around something like this.  and what makes it even more difficult for a group of people – everybody handles the shock differently.  this one cries, this one shouts, this one doubts, the other one just keep quiet.  and it made me think – where is god in all of this?  when everything is good, we easily say “god is so good”, but when the going gets tough, we might doubt god or we might ask for healing and when it doesn’t happen, we look for answers.

i’m sure there are a lot of situations out there like the one we have, or slightly different, another disease, a high-jacking, a rape, a theft or even a flood.  a lot of bad things happen in this life and most of us look to god, the god of the universe, and we ask questions.  and when the answer doesn’t come the way we want it, we bail.  and you might say, yeah peter what do you know?  your best friend wasn’t rape, or your family member wasn’t murdered or you didn’t lose your mother to cancer?  maybe, maybe not, i know we all experience things differently and to cope with life and the understanding of god we all react in a different way.  that is normal, because we are different individuals and you are allowed to ask, fight and do whatever.

within this all i personally was just reminded that even though i don’t always understand, or get the right answers for my questions, i can always come with confidence to god.  and even if god is still a mystery, i will always receive mercy and find grace to help me thru whatever comes my way.

hope you find it too.

xenophobia in south africa

while i am resting at my home – i took a few days off – other people are being chased out of their homes and out of the country.  not even 100km from me, people fear for their lives, because of the recent xenophobic attacks.  it really breaks my heart that after thousands of years and with the history of the world on wars and violence, we as human beings have still not realized that such violence will bring us nowhere.  it will only destroy.

it doesn’t matter how you look at it – and i know there are a lot of different opinions about foreigners in our country – you cannot in any way approve of it.  it is wrong, just wrong and the sad part of it is it’s almost always the innocent that suffers.  where is the love man, where has it gone?

i think love is hiding with our president.  mr.thabo mbeki.   nothing against you sir, but i really think that our country needed to see more of you during this time.  unfortunately they did not.  everything rises and falls on leadership – the country should have seen you when these attacks on innocent people started.

let us all think of the innocent people being robbed of the right to basic needs.  no matter where you’re from – no one has to suffer like this.

real men follow jesus

real men follow jesus - was the bumper sticker i saw on the back of a big bakkie (suv) a couple of days ago.  since then i have been thinking about that statement and about the public display of such a statement.

my first thought was - what is the reaction of the world?  especially non-christians.  if i was a non-christian i would immediately think - well does that mean, because i don’t follow jesus, i’m not a real man.  i’m sure the person who created the sticker did not intend to proclaim that some people, a lot of people are not real men.  maybe the creator of this sticker really felt the urge to scream to the world what he believes.  nothing wrong with that - i’m just asking the question - was this the testimony god wanted us to be? we do a lot of things, but sometimes we forget that the world is watching and they are waiting for opportunities to mock, break down and criticize jesus and his followers.  what the world knows and experiences about jesus, they know and experience thru his followers.  and we as his followers have to remember that.  non-believers have not had the wonderful experiences we’ve had - those experiences that you can’t explain to someone else.

i’m not saying stop sharing your testimony - but look at your ways of doing it.

maybe our testimonies should be more applicable to those who are in desperate need of the truth.  you wouldn’t give a 7 year old a 900 page book on ground engineering.  you get my point.  know your market.  putting such a sticker on your car is maybe winning you points with other christians, but not with the secular working class of south africa.
